This legendary region, filled with history and wine, has the world’s largest urban UNESCO World Heritage site. While the name Bordeaux is famous by its wine, the homonymous city and its surroundings are full of the most authentic French joie de vivre all year long. While the countryside has bucolic vineyards, meandering rivers and lots of vestiges of Gallo-Roman culture, the city itself is filled with historic monuments, bustling markets, attractive museums, cannelé cafes, unmissable wine bars and boutique art shops and galleries. Perfectly blending so diverse architecture styles, museums are a must there, from the Musee des Beaux-Arts to the contemporary art museum CAPC. There are also lots of local markets and shopping opportunities in general - including the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe (rue Sainte Catherine). The amazing Cité du Vin, Bordeaux’s wine museum, is the world’s first interactive wine museum and a true cultural destination (including very good restaurants). The Garonne River, essential for the free flow of wine and other products, is always available for a river cruising or short boat tours. With some extra time, it's also a wonderful call pop to the beautiful Saint-Émilion, known for its award-winning wines and a lovely medieval village filled with charming boutiques, cafes, galleries and a Monolithic church.
